Yamaha HS5 studio monitor on an SMPad 5 isolation pad

Best Isolation Pads for Yamaha HS3, HS4, HS5, HS7 and HS8

Yamaha HS monitors are known for an honest, flat sound – which also means they show every problem in your room. One of the most common problems is the desk itself: when a monitor sits directly on a desk or shelf, part of its energy goes into the surface, which vibrates and adds a boomy, smeared low end. An isolation pad decouples the monitor from the desk, so you hear the speaker instead of the furniture.

The question we get most often is simple: which pad fits which HS model? Here is the short answer, based on the base size of each speaker.

Quick answer: the right pad for every Yamaha HS model

Yamaha model Speaker base (W × D) Best fit Alternative
HS3 5.2" × 7.4" SMPad 4 Subble 1.2" feet
HS4 6.7" × 8.3" SMPad 4 Subble 1.2" feet
HS5 6.7" × 8.7" SMPad 5 VibeBoss P5 platform
HS7 8.3" × 11.2" SMPad 5 SMPads
HS8 9.8" × 13.1" SMPad 8 SMPads
HS8S (subwoofer) – VibeBoss P10 platform subPods feet

Yamaha HS5 on an SMPad 5 – the pad is slightly deeper than the speaker, so it stays stable when tilted.

Why the base size matters more than the woofer size

Pads are named after a driver size (SMPad 4, 5, 8) because that is how most people search, but what really decides the fit is the footprint of the speaker. The speaker should sit on the pad so it looks right and stays stable. A small overhang is fine – the base can be up to about 1.2" wider or 1.5" deeper than the pad – but beyond that you should move up a size.

That is why the HS7 fits the SMPad 5 even though it has a 6.5" woofer: its 8.3" × 11.2" base sits comfortably on the 7.5" × 11" SMPad 5. The HS8, with its larger cabinet, needs the 10.65" × 13" SMPad 8.

Weight is not the deciding factor for foam pads. The high-density acoustic foam (50 kg/m³) easily carries any HS monitor; choose by the base.

Yamaha HS5: SMPad 5 or VibeBoss P5?

For the HS5 you have two good options:

  • SMPad 5 – high-density foam with removable wedges, so you can angle the monitor up or down (up to 5 positions, including flat). Choose it if your desk is low or high and the tweeter doesn't point at your ears.
  • VibeBoss P5 – a flat platform: an MDF board on high-density foam, with CR foam strips on top and a non-slip base. Choose it if your desk height is already right and you want a solid, flat surface that keeps the monitor perfectly level.

Tilting HS monitors toward your ears

Yamaha HS tweeters work best when they point at your ears. If you sit higher than the monitors, use the wedges to tilt them up; if the monitors sit on a high shelf, tilt them down. Every SMPad comes with foam wedges that stack in different ways, giving up to five positions, including flat.

Prefer feet instead of pads?

If you want the smallest possible footprint, silicone isolation feet are an alternative. For the HS3, HS4 and HS5, the Subble 1.2" (8 Pack) carries up to 24 lb per speaker. For the HS7 and HS8, use the Subble 1.8" (8 Pack), up to 45 lb per speaker. Our premium option is s-Pods – silicone and steel feet, up to 44 lb per speaker.

Frequently asked questions

Do isolation pads really make a difference on Yamaha HS monitors?

On a desk or shelf, yes. Decoupling the monitor reduces the vibration that goes into the surface, so the low end gets tighter and clearer. On rigid, heavy stands the difference is smaller.

Will the HS8 fit on an SMPad 5?

No – the HS8 base is too large for it. Use the SMPad 8 or the SMPads bars.

Which pad do I need for the HS8S subwoofer?

The VibeBoss P10 platform (13.75" × 15.75", up to 90 lb) is made for 8"–10" subwoofers like the HS8S.
